Case Study: Loans
Background:
Loan administration and processing was introduced onto the Windsor Life core administration
system ALPHA in 1999. Since its introduction a number of functional issues have existed
which caused the processing to become increasingly unreliable.
In October 2002, a project was commissioned by Windsor Life to repair some of the
problems identified within the policy loan functionality. At the time the project
was commissioned there were approximately 1,000 policy loans being administered on
the ALPHA system with a value of approximately 3.4M.
Windsor Life chose our sister company, Design & Development Solutions Limited
(DDSL), to provide a solution to these problems that would ensure the Policy Loans
Administration System was reliable whilst maintaining its full integration within
the ALPHA system. The successful implementation of this project would allow
Windsor Life to offer their clients loans which would provide a profitable solution
to policy surrender.
"Getting a reliable bespoke loans administration system up and running had proved
a real headache with two previous attempts leaving problems with both functionality
and data. DDSL proposed an efficient and effective solution for cleaning up our historic
data and thoroughly de-bugged the code to correct the functionality. The project was
released on time and within budget with DDSL offering full testing, conversion and
post implementation support. Overall we were very pleased with the outcome of the
project"

Solution:
In response to business requirements specified by Windsor Life, our resources designed,
developed and implemented a solution that enables Windsor Life to successfully and
accurately administer policy loans through the ALPHA system. These resources worked
closely with business experts from Windsor Life to produce a detailed functional specification
that ensured the business requirements were met.
The project spanned a seven month period and was successfully implemented to timescales
in July 2003 at agreed costs.
Technologies:
The solution developed was on an ORACLE database running under HP UNIX.
The batch processing was written in Pro* COBOL and PL/SQL.
The graphical user interface developed in Visual Basic with some C and PL/SQL.
